An interesting question often asked by people wanting to learn internet marketing is how can twitter be used to make money or how can I make money with twitter? To have a complete understanding about twitter and how it can be used for marketing purposes we must find out exactly what it is and what it is not.

Twitter is a fast growing social site in which users communicate with each other about interesting topics, current news, products and services. Users are permitted to post short sentences of one hundred forty characters maximum called tweets. Why they are called tweets I’m not quite sure but using the proper terminology is important so we will call them tweets.

A couple of things we need to know about twitter that are essential are when we want to communicate and exchange tweets we must first follow someone by clicking on the follow button on their twitter page and then if they choose they can follow us back. When we are following them and they are following us, we are then allowed to see all their tweets as well as them seeing ours. We can also have the ability to direct message our followers which is like having a private conversation and they can direct message us back. This seems confusing doesn’t it? It is at first but like in everything the more practice you have the easier it becomes and once you start taking action you will discover how the whole twitter thing works.

There are complete books written on how to use twitter which can be great reference tools and are available at just about any bookstore. Getting more than one perspective on anything is always a great idea.

To really understand twitter think about it as a huge party where people come to socialize and communicate ideas. When your meeting people at a party you ask them about their job, their family , what they like, what they dislike, their interest and hobbies. These opening conversations are a start to building relationships and trust. Many online marketers failing to realize what twitter is about jump in with both feet and try to sell their products and services directly to others. This would be like going to a party and when you walk in the door start rambling away to everyone insight trying to sell them something. You will quickly find out you won’t have anyone to talk to for very long.

The only one welcome at the door selling something and will be invited back is the pizza guy and if you aren’t supplying the favorite toppings don’t try selling.

Making money with twitter is about making connections with people who have common interest or are searching for information about a certain topic, service, product or business. When you open a twitter account you are asked to create a profile and in this profile you will mention something about what your interests are and then fellow twitter’ers sharing like interests can then find you and join the conversation by exchanging tweets. These people can be highly qualified leads if you are marketing a business or product. But remember no selling, or maybe, well, just a little. Making money with twitter begins when it is used as part of a sales funnel created in order for you, the business owner, to direct potential customers from twitter to a website, blog, video or article where they are given more information about a certain product or service you provide. This is the start of building a quality relationship between you and your prospects who will become satisfied customers when they make purchases from you now and in the future. Like any other internet marketing technique twitter will only be successful for those who, first take action by setting up their account properly and then start tweeting their tweeter off to their followers giving valuable information and insight about topics of like interest such as,making money, financial freedom, wealth creation or really important things like who’s dating who in Hollywood.

As of now twitter doesn’t offer any type of advertising platform where money can be made directly with ads displayed along the sides of the pages like other social media sites such as Facebook and Linked In so for now play by the rules and build lasting relationships the twitter way.
